Wake UP!!

Happy New Year! It’s 2009.

A new year often brings rejuvenation. I’ve asked God to give me a “fresh wind”, and a narrow focus for 2009. He has already answered my request. Holiness. That’s my goal. I want to hunger for holiness, and eliminate any and all roadblocks. If you’d like to join me read this month’s article and stay tuned. I’ll be incorporating what I learn into this newsletter thought the year.

For now, buy a bag of African coffee, take a peek at some new workshops, and relish in God’s amazing grace.

Under His Wing,

Laura

Are You Hungry?
Satisfaction for the Soul

by Laura Petherbridge

What comes to your mind when you think of the word “holiness”? If you are like me it’s rules, regulations and “white knuckling” it through stuff we don’t like. At the very least, purity is viewed as boring. I think our warped definition of holiness needs a “make over”—a face lift. C.S. Lewis described holiness this way, “How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real thing…it is irresistible.” We don’t often associate holiness with irresistible. Chocolate cake, now that’s irresistible. Holiness seems more like a strict diet and giving up things we enjoy.

The root of the word holy is “to cut, to separate”, which means to be, “set apart, to be distinct, to be different.”  When we imagine... [click here to read]

Touching Lives

Laura recently led a women’s Bible study with Kay Arthur’s book, “Lord, Give Me a Heart for You.” At the conclusion of the study the women donated $500 to ALARM, www.alarm-inc.org, a Christian organization that helps African widows and orphans. Laura’s friend, Dr. Mark Struck, personally took the money to the women pictured in Nairobi. Many of their husbands have been lost to war, conflict or genocide during terrorist invasions.

Dr. Struck shares: “However, The women did not keep the money you sent. They heard of another group of women with 32 families living in one house. These women have all been widowed, leaving not only their own kids to raise, but many adopted the children of their brothers and sisters who were killed in the conflict in DR Congo or in the post-election violence in Kenya last January. Now there are 32 families in one house and no way of baking bread or preparing food. Therefore, the women decided that although they needed the money, feeding the children in these 32 families was a priority. They asked ALARM to purchase a fuel efficient burner oven so that these families might fill the stomachs of 80 children. The poor gave to the poorer...what a joy to behold.

Your gift of $500 is the exact price of a special oven that takes no firewood and helps prevent the deforestation of Kenya and Congo. It was even greater to see the women have learned to help others in need that they have never met, and they made the sacrifice to help these families and the children.”

May the Lord continue to press upon our hearts the need to help those who are suffering in other lands.
